Mr. Dino Meleye |
The Senator representing Kogi-West senatorial district,
Mr. Dino Meleye has called on President Mohamadu Buhari to sack the finance
minister Kemi Adeosun, the Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele and the
minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma for grossly underperformances.
Dino Meleye who made the statement in Abuja today
said the president must as a matter of urgency relive those who has shown they cannot
deliver on the expectations of their ministry and agencies from their
portfolios. This he said must be done in order to revive the ailing economy
Mr. Meleye, who is of the ruling APC, same as the president said “At the moment, it must be
crystal clear to all discerning minds that the President’s widely-acclaimed
magical body language has lost its presumed aura and efficacy. His no-nonsense
demeanor is equally neither instilling fear nor commanding respect and loyalty
from among his cabinet members.
“It is therefore obvious that the time for
barking is over; now is the time to bite and boot out all those who have
demonstrated, in the past several months, a crass lack of capacity to
effectively carry out the functions of their office.”
He said the finance minister has shown that she
lacks the experience and rudimentary economic fundamental to run a critical
aspect of the economy like the finance ministry, stressing it was time for her
to go in order to make room for someone who has the capacity to steer the
Nigerian economy from the dark woods it has sunk under her stewardship.
Mr. Meleye said, “Senator Udoma is a charismatic gentleman, an
accomplished lawyer with a track record as a quintessential gentleman and a
fairly untainted reputation, but lacks the professional knowledge to occupy the
position of budget and national planning” , stressing that the critical
requirement of the position requires more than been a good man. He further
said, Udoma’s appointment is tantamount to nepotism taking to a ridiculous height,
and a clear case of putting a round peg in a square hole. It will and can never
fit, it’s akin to saddling a carpenter with a tailor’s responsibility.
On the
CBN governor, Mr. Meleye said, the way he handles the Dasuki-gate issue coupled
with the free fall of the naira, and the total loss of faith and confidence in
the Nigerian economy has made his sack imminent.
The President according to Dino must muster the
courage to wield the big stick and do what is necessary in this situation, by
sacking these people and replacing them with gurus in their fields, in other to
save the Nigerian economy, as well as the suffering Nigerian masses.
The vice president Yemi Osinbajo, who heads the
economic team, was not spared by Mr. Meleye, as he asked for him to be relived
of that responsibility.
Instead he asked that the president constitute
an “Emergency economic Ad-hoc committee” that will include all former finance
ministers, CBN governors, budget and national planning and members of the academia
with deep knowledge of developmental economics to drive the revival program
He said “the president must immediately transit
from mere rhetoric to drastic to save the economy and Nigerians from total collapse.
“The hunger in the land is real, pervasive,
widespread and debilitating for the poor masses. As I walk the streets of my constituency these
days, I constantly harbor a foreboding that I could be stoned by my angry
constituents for the failure of Mr
President to fulfill campaign promises and expectations to Nigerians”, Mr.
Meleye said.
“While there is a lot of hunger, anger, anguish and despair currently
in the land, I have a firm believe that
the situation is not beyond redemption
for Mr. President, hence my call for urgent and remedial action now” ,
Mr. Meleye concluded.
