Gen.Sani Abacha |
A Nigerian US based Nigerian Attorney, Godson Nnaka, who was
contracted by the Nigerian government in 2004, to help find and recover funds
siphoned by Abacha and his associates, has asked the court to appoint him a
private Attorney General of the funds, as well as award him 40 percent of the
recovered funds. This request he said was inline with United States Law.
Nnaka, has also accused the Attorney-General of the
Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, of demanding
kickback of as much as 70 percent of his fees, and acting in a vindictive manner,
after he turned down his demand
Speaking with PREMIUM
TIMES in a telephone interview, Benneth Amadi, Nnaka’s Lawyer, said after it
became clear to Malami, that his client was not ready to share his fees with
him, he started acting in a “vindictive manner.
The problem started when the AGF, Malami appointed another
Attorney to represent Nigeria after a communication breakdown with the Texas
based Attorney
Malami on his part accused Nnaka of been a fraudster, saying he was
actually contracted by the former AGF but never did his job and so has no right
to demand any fees from Nigerian government.
Nnaka on his part is insisting that Malami's change of attitude is over his refusal to play according to his kickback demands, he said he has proves to show
that Malami actually made the demand for him to give him 70% of his fees before
he would okay his request.
As it stands now, Nigeria may lose the already recovered $550
million Abacha lot if a suit filed by the Texas based Nigerian Attorney against
the Nigerian government in a United States federal court is not quickly
resolved, according to Premium Times.
